Captain Morgan KO ‘won’t lead to loan swoop’

GARY Caldwell does not feel the shoulder injury sustained by captain Craig Morgan will force Wigan Athletic to enter the loan market for reinforcements.

Morgan has been ruled out for up to a month with a shoulder problem picked up against Crewe last weekend.

And that could lead to a formation change when Latics travel to Derbyshire to face Chesterfield this weekend, looking to record back-to-back victories for the first time this season.

“Morgs has a shoulder injury that he picked up at the end of the Crewe game,” revealed Caldwell.

“We didn’t think it was a big deal at the time, but the specialist says it could be three to four weeks.

“His absence will obviously be a huge blow because he’s the captain and he’s done very well for us.

“He’s been a big part of the back three and, with him out, it’ll be difficult to play that formation.”

Although the loan market re-opens next week, Caldwell - who brought in a whopping 20 new players this summer - doesn’t envisage doing any additional business to cope with Morgan’s absence.

“I don’t think so, we’ve done all our business,” he added.

“We’ve had a lot of people both out and in, and I believe we’ve now got a squad that’s ready to mount a serious challenge.

“There’s been a massive turnover of players, and everyone who wanted to go, had to go, or who we chose to go, have now left.

“We’ve reassembled the team, and I believe it’s a really exciting team and one that can play great football and win games in this league.”
