WIGAN Athletic left it very late before deservedly securing the spoils from a real Christmas cracker on the Fylde coast.

The visitors had gone in front six minutes before half-time when Andy Kellett had cut in off the right-hand side before firing into the bottom corner past goalkeeper Chris Maxwell.

Latics then squandered a number of chances to kill off the game in a thoroughly one-sided spell at the beginning of the second period.

Donervon Daniels headed against the bar from Max Power’s pinpoint corner.

Power himself then sent a lovely free-kick over the wall and against the woodwork, and the home side were again encouraged to think there just might be something in the game for them.

Incredibly, on a rare excursion into the Latics box at the three-quarter mark, Daniels upended David Ball for a clear penalty.

And Antoni Sarcevic sent Jussi Jaaskelainen the wrong way to level the scores.

Town then enjoyed a dominant period themselves with Latics somehow finding themselves hanging on at 1-1.

But the game veered back Wigan’s way thanks to an inspired double substitution with 10 minutes remaining.

On came Yanic Wildschut and Jordy Hiwula and, within three minutes, Latics were ahead.

The former’s run and shot forced a parry from Maxwell, and the latter was on hand to stab home to the delight of the Wigan fans behind the goal.

Conor McLoughlin somehow fired wide as Fleetwood attempted a second response in the closing stages.

But Latics killed it off in stoppage-time when Michael Jacobs raced clear and slotted the ball home with aplomb.
