REECE James believes this weekend’s trip to Crewe presents an ideal opportunity for Wigan Athletic to crank up the pressure on the sides above them in League One.
Latics moved level with fourth-placed Coventry thanks to their 3-1 victory over Chesterfield at the weekend.
Three more points on Saturday against the rock-bottom Railwaymen could take them level with third-placed Walsall, and only a point off the automatic promotion spots.
Without getting complacent, James says in-form Latics – with only two defeats in their last 20 league games – are finding their feet at exactly the right time.
“I don’t think we’ve been above fourth yet this season, and it would be nice to get up into third as quickly as possible,” he told the Evening Post.
“That would allow us to put some real pressure on the top two sides in the division.
“That’s always been the main aim this season – to get promoted – and we’re all desperate to achieve that goal.”
Latics are slowly clawing back points on the sides above them, and are particularly hoping to avenge defeats to Coventry and Burton in the return fixtures to come.
“We’ve got to play a lot of the teams in and around us in the table, which is great for us,” James added.
“We’ve only managed to win one of those games so far – the home game against Gillingham the other week.
“And we’ve got an ideal chance to be able to pull back some points that we’ve lost earlier in the season.”
