WIGAN Athletic’s players and supporters will this weekend show their support for Juan Carlos Garcia, who is continuing to battle leukaemia.

The League One clash with Fleetwood has been dedicated to the Honduras international, with fans being asked to salute him in the 23rd minute of the game, to reflect his squad number 23.

“It’s been such a sad story, for such a young man with a young family, for something like this to happen is very sad,” acknowledged boss Gary Caldwell.

“We hope he keeps fighting and pulls through, and we can show our support for him this weekend and hopefully also get a win for him.

“In football you live in a bubble - it consumes you and all you think about is Saturday and winning games.

“You can sometimes forget about the real world, and the things that are really important in life.

“Obviously things like Juan’s illness brings that to the fore, and we want him to know we’re all thinking about him and his family.

“He’s been really ill but I text him this week and he text straight back, which shows the strength of him and what he’s able to do.

“Karen (Armstrong), the player liaison at the club, has been excellent in terms of looking after him and is family.

“She’s been amazing in what she’s done for him.

“Whatever Saturday does for Leukaemia Care or for Juan himself, hopefully it can help in a small way.”

Wigan’s players will warm up in Leukaemia Care t-shirts, while there will be a bucket collection inside and outside the stadium on the day.

Members of the FuerzaJCGarcia group of Latics fans, who organised a charity match in July, will also be presenting a cheque to Leukaemia Care on the pitch at half-time.
