ACADEMY chief Gregor Rioch insists the long-term future of Wigan Athletic remains in very safe hands.
Although the first team will start next term in League One after two relegations in the space of two years, the Development Squad and Under-18s enjoyed successful seasons.
And Rioch believes the call-up of young midfielder Adrian Purzycki by Poland ahead of their UEFA European Under 19 Championship qualifying campaign underlines the solid foundations being laid behind the scenes which will bear fruit in the years to come.
“Not only is the prestige good for Adrian, but the extra work leading into pre-season will really give him a boost ahead of a fresh season with the Development Squad,” said Rioch.
“The experience of working outside the usual environment always helps players to learn new things, and he always applies it when he returns to us, as do Kelland (Absalom), Owen (Evans) and Matty (Hamilton) when they go to represent their countries.”
