Mackay - We’ll give FA Cup our best shot

MALKY Mackay insists Wigan Athletic will be giving the FA Cup their full attention after being handed a short trip to Bolton in next month’s third round.

It’s an immediate chance for Latics to avenge the dismal 3-1 league defeat at the Macron Stadium last month, which proved to be Uwe Rosler’s last match in charge.

And Mackay will be hoping a decent cup run can work in tandem with an upturn in league fortunes.

“The FA Cup is something I respect greatly, and we’ll be focusing on nothing other than Bolton when the time comes,” said Mackay.

“Without a doubt, there won’t be any question of a shadow team going out that day.

“The FA Cup is an historic competition – and I certainly don’t need to tell anyone in these parts of its importance.

“It’s a competition I was always proud to play in, and it’s the same as a manager.

“The furthest I got was to the semi-finals during my time at Watford, when we played Manchester United at Villa Park.

“That was a terrific experience, and obviously for Wigan Athletic to have gone all the way two seasons ago was even better.”
