JAMES McClean looks set to again play a key role for Ireland next month – but it remains to be seen whether he’ll still be a Wigan Athletic player.

The 26-year-old has, along with former Latic James McCarthy, been called up by Martin O’Neill for the forthcoming internationals against England (June 7) and Scotland (June 13).

In the meantime, his domestic future continues to be the centre of feverish transfer speculation.

Having been strongly linked with a move away from the DW Stadium for much of the year, talk of McClean leaving has gone into overdrive since relegation to League One was confirmed last month.

McClean is currently holidaying in the USA, fuelling rumours of interest from MLS outfits New York Red Bulls and Orlando City.

He’s enjoying some well-earned down-time after doing everything on a personal level to keep Latics in the Championship.

McClean, the club’s top goalscorer with six goals, was voted Player of the Year and hinted towards the end of the campaign he would not be overly keen on dropping down a division with next summer’s European Championships on the horizon.

It promises to be a huge summer of upheaval at the DW, with Ali Al Habsi, Emmerson Boyce, Gaetan Bong, Jermaine Pennant, Kim Bo-Kyung, William Kvist and Marc-Antoine Fortune all out of contract, and loan signings Harry Maguire, Leon Clarke, Sheyi Ojo, Jerome Sinclair and Josh Murphy having already returned to their parent clubs.
