Morgan aims to blunt the Blades

CRAIG Morgan admits Wigan Athletic are relishing the prospect of locking horns with fellow League One big-hitters Sheffield United at the DW Stadium on Boxing Day.

The two sides were the bookies’ favourites for promotion before the season started, but both have found it rather tougher to make their mark than had been predicted.

While Latics have recovered from a slow start to climb to fifth in the standings, the Blades have spent much of the campaign outside the play-off picture looking in.

However, with both sides coming in to the games on the back of good weekend wins, Morgan is under no illusion as to the size of the task facing Latics this weekend.

“They’ll come with a bit of momentum, as will we,” he told the Evening Post.

“It’ll be two big clubs going at it, and we’re all really looking forward to the challenge.

“It was a real group effort from all 14 lads at Barnsley last Saturday. It’s a good group we’ve got here, there’s a good mentality about us and we all play our part.

“We’re all in it together, and that’s why I’m so confident about what’s going to happen this year.”

Saturday’s clash is Wigan’s peultimate of 2015, with the trip to Fleetwood next Monday drawing a line under an eventful 12 months on and off the field.

Latics have been as busy as any team on the planet in terms of transfer dealings, with over 70 players either arriving or leaving since January 1.

However, Morgan feels the balance in the squad is finally there, and isn’t expecting much business being conduced when the transfer window reopens next week.

“I wouldn’t envisage the gaffer will be doing much business during the window,” the Latics captain added.

“It’s up to the players here to make sure they impress the gaffer in the coming weeks to persuade him he doesn’t need to be bringing in many new players.”
