Six more wins and we’re champions – that’s the only target for Gavin Massey and Wigan Athletic.

The 4-1 victory at Rochdale on Tuesday night took Latics back to the top of League One on goal difference over Blackburn, who only have five games remaining.

Latics now have a five-point advantage over third-placed Shrewsbury, with the same games played, as the race for promotion hots up.

And Massey admits it’s all about sprinting for the finishing line now rather than looking over their shoulders.

“We’re back on top of the league, and staying there’s got to be the aim now,” said Massey.

“There’s a massive six games ahead, and we won’t be taking any of them lightly.

“As everyone knows there’ll probably be twists and turns to come.

“But all we can do is go out to win all six games, knowing if we do that we will be champions.

“We know it’ll be Saturday-Tuesday- Saturday for the rest of the season, but we’re ready for it.

“The squad’s good enough and big enough to be able to cope.

“I don’t think you really get tired at this stage of the season.

“You just want to games to come thick and fast, tick them off one by one, and be where you want to be at the end of the season.”

Massey was again impressive during the win at Rochdale, and he admits he’s pleased with his form of late.

“I feel I’m contributing to the team in a good way,” the forward acknowledged.

“Obviously I’d like to be scoring more goals and providing more assists, on a personal level.

“But the main thing is the team, and making sure we get promoted.

“Whatever I can do to help the team do that, I’ll continue to do.

“In the last couple of games I’ve managed to come up with a couple of assists, and hopefully I can keep going.

“As a team, we’re playing some really good football at the moment, and that’s been shown by the quality and the amount of goals.”

Meanwhile, tickets for Wigan’s Sky Bet League One trip to Fleetwood Town on Saturday,April 21 have sold out.
