Wigan Athletic's opening goal 'was a foul', moans Blackburn keeper

Blackburn goalkeeper Christian Walton was adamant he was fouled in the lead-up to Wigan Athletic opening goal in their 2-0 victory at the DW Stadium.

Walton, who was returning to the club with whom he'd spent the previous two seasons on loan from Brighton, was unable to collect Antonee Robinson's 80th-minute cross under pressure from Kieffer Moore, with Lee Evans lashing in the rebound.

Michael Jacobs then doubled the advantage in stoppage-time, leaving Rovers boss Tony Mowbray 'disappointed and frustrated'.

"Chris (Walton) thinks he was fouled," revealed Mowbray. "I will watch it back at some stage.

"He got clattered, but I don't know because I never seen it, so I'm not sitting here and saying that it was a definite foul.

"I saw a goal last weekend that we scored, which to me watching it back looked a perfectly good goal.

"Maybe this one when I look back is a perfectly good goal, the difference is that this one didn't get ruled out and last week's did."

Mowbray saw his side's play-off hopes dashed as Wigan extended their unbeaten run to eight games to move five points clear of the drop zone.

“It’s very disappointing, because we sensed an opportunity in our next two away games to give ourselves a platform, but it wasn’t to be," he added.

“We created some half-chances, and it’s frustrating because I feel we controlled long spells of the game.

“The first half was a little bit end-to-end, but we were on top in the second half.

"If you create half-chances then they have to go in.

“When the ball flashes across the box, [Sam] Gallagher at the back post with the header, they have to go in. If they do then you could win 1-0.

“Wigan are doing exceptionally well and are unbeaten in their last eight.

“They have good players and a good team, but it was a game I never thought we were going to lose, and we never even ended up drawing.”
