Furlong, who was the England player-manager, said: "It was a very emotional and a proud moment for us all to win this tournament.

"The IWFF organisation is built on creating a family culture and many friendships have been made across all countries from around the world."

Fellow Wiganer Shaz Entwistle was part of the ladies over-50s team that narrowly missed out on top spot.

Entwistle, who plays for Bolton Arena, was a pivotal member of the squad and scored a fabulous winner in the final game against Sweden.

The IWFF England organisation enjoyed huge success across the spectrum, with the ladies over-40s and over-60s victorious in their categories.

The men's over-60s, over-65s and over-70s also won their tournaments to hopefully set the platform for Gareth Southgate and his players at this summer's Euros.

Glover said: "Walking football is an incredible inclusive sport that keeps you physically and mentally active. I would recommend the sport to anyone who is thinking of dusting off their boots.

"We are all very proud to play for Winstanley Walkers FC and for England. To play for your country is a massive privilege, and all our teams are looking forward to going to Malmö in 2025 and rising to the challenge of defending our titles."
