The 27-year-old forward, who spent time on loan with Latics in 2013-14 during his Manchester United days, has joined on a short-term deal until January 9.

After training with the club over the summer - and impressing in the friendly wins over Bolton and Bradford - he's finally put pen to paper, having left Ipswich at the end of last term.

And boss John Sheridan is confident he can put the injury problems that have dogged his career well and truly behind him.

"Will was previously here for three or four weeks just before I came in," the Latics manager said.

"Obviously we know he's got great talent and he's played at a higher level.

"I think his main downfall has been the number of injuries he's picked up over the years.

"He's looked very sharp, he's technically very good, and he's looking very fit at the moment.

"I feel he's a really good addition, because we have needed someone up top to help Garns (Joe Garner) and us as a team.

"We have been short in the attack-minded department, and he'll be a really big plus for us."

Having fielded offers from elsewhere, Sheridan feels Keane opting for Wigan is a real filip for the club.

"He'll have worked briefly with the coaches during the off-season, and he's realised they can help him," Sheridan added.

"Even with what's been going on, we've tried to be as positive as we can on the training ground, and I think he'll have taken that on board.

"I think it's important now he tries to get as many games under his belt, get some playing time, and hopefully get his career back on track."
