Winning is just the tonic for Captain Morgan

The former Wales international defender turned down several offers to stay in the Championship when leaving Rotherham for the DW.

But he made sure his stay in the third tier was only temporary by leading Latics to the League One title in style.

“I met the gaffer last summer, and we spoke for hours about what we wanted to do, what we needed to do, and how we’d go forward,” Morgan told the Evening Post.

“I’ve always said that I love being part of a team that is winning. That is massive for me, and has been what I’ve enjoyed in my career.

“I’d much rather be in a winning team in a league below than a team that’s mulling around in the division above.

“As soon as I spoke to the guys here, I knew it was the right thing for me to do.”

Latics picked up the League One title at the weekend despite rounding off their campaign with a 4-1 defeat by Barnsley.

However, Morgan will not be losing sleep over the final hurdle of a successful season.

“We were a bit flat on Sunday, but we’d done all our hard work over the last 45 games and I’m not too concerned about that,” he said.

“If we were going for the championship it might have been different, but it’s not about Sunday.

“It’s about the whole season and we’re not going to dwell too much on the last game.”

Meanwhile, a limited number of tickets remain for ‘An Audience With Paul Scharner and Arjan de Zeeuw’ at the DW Stadium tomorrow night.
