ASHTON Athletic have appointed Jay Foulds as their new first team manager.

Foulds, previously assistant manager at Wigan Robin Park, takes over from Jimmy McBride, who left the club a couple of weeks ago. He will be assisted by former Robins team mates Ben Kay and Dougie Pitts.

McBride had taken over as manager at Brocstedes Park midway through last season with the club deep in relegation trouble, and managed to rebuild the squad and steer them to safety in the final game of the season. But, as Athletic Secretary Alan Greenhalgh explained, the loss of a major sponsor at the club meant that budget cuts had to be made on the playing side.

“Jimmy came in and saved us from relegation last season, and everyone at the club is very grateful to him for the job that he did for us”, said Greenhalgh.

“No one wanted him to leave, but he felt that he couldn’t carry on doing the job the way he wanted with the resources we have available for the coming season. We parted on good terms, he’s a great guy and we wish him all the best.

“When we spoke to Jay we felt he was the right type of person to take on the job. He’s a local lad, who is confident he can bring in plenty of locally based players who will support the club both on and off the field, so we decided to give him the opportunity.” Foulds said: “Since we have been appointed all are phones haven’t stopped with players asking to come down and attend pre-season training which starts on June 25.”
