WIGAN Wheelers stalwart Lionel Lea has achieved his lifetime ambition and clocked up 500,000 miles on the road.

Lionel, aged 72, started riding in 1952 and soon after joined the Wheelers and began competing in time trial races.

Over subsequent years he rode many long distance trials, including riding 242 miles in 12 hours, 442 miles in 24 hours and 100 miles in four hours, 42 minutes.

Lionel also held the record for a couple of place to place rides.

Considering many of these rides were completed more than 35 years ago on an all steel cycle and sometimes fixed wheels, they were remarkable achievements. Upwards of 500,000 miles completed in 55 years equates to an average of 175 miles per week, for every single week.

Lionel, whose riding is currently restricted due to ill health, has also been the official recorder for all time trial races in the north of England for more than 30 years, and maintains a full record of every daily ride he has ever completed!
