HAYLEY Jones drew a line under her Olympic disappointment – with two Diamond League meetings in a week!

The Wigan Harrier made her debut in the competition – the Champions League of athletics – in Switzerland last week.

She helped the Great Britain relay team to a fifth-placed finish in the final, behind Poland, Switzerland, Ukraine and a Jamaica-USA mix. The winners set a new meeting record of 42.51 – GB finished with 44.37, with Jones racing the third leg.

And she backed that up with an appearance at Birmingham at the weekend in front of the BBC cameras.

Jones finished seventh in her 100m heat with 11.52, just 0.17 of the winning time.

She said: “I loved it. I got the chance to do my first Diamond League a few days and to find out I got a chance to do another one so soon. The crowd was so loud and it gave me a buzz. I knew I had a good start – when I got across the line I thought, ‘was I really that close’.

“I saw the replay and I was in the mix, and that was encouraging.”

The Diamond League chances came just weeks after Jones was forced to watch the Olympics on TV, after the Team GB women’s relay time failed to qualify for the competition.

The 23-year-old said: “At the time it was heartbreaking. I sat and watched it for two weeks – it was a hard two weeks.

“I didn’t have any races planned and thought it was the end of my season, then I got the call to do the Diamond Leagues.”

Meanwhile, Jenny Meadows is recovering from Achilles surgery.
