STANDISH St Wilf’s faced the biggest match in their long history as they faced Prestwich in the Lancashire Amateur Cup Final at Leyland.

Sadly it was an off day for the Wilf’s as they sunk to a 5-0 defeat.

They were caught cold after just 11 minutes when Prestwich took the lead.

At the other end Rick Alker had a couple of half chances but they came to nothing. Minutes later it was 2-0 following a bizarre back pass and Prestwich were well on top. Alker then was bundled over in the penalty area but no penalty was given.

A 30-yard free kick gave Prestwich a 3-0 interval lead.

The second half saw John Du Toit take the game by the scruff of the neck and Standish laid siege to their opponents goal.

The keeper pulled off some glorious saves with one from Jon Hook out of the top drawer. Despite this pressure Prestwich stood firm and increased their lead against the run of play when they were awarded a penalty.

As time ran out Standish were still plugging away but as they poured forward as breakaway gave Prestwich their fifth goal.

Standish can feel proud of their efforts in the competition and have brought much credit to the League - let’s hope they go one better next season!
