Their 18-6 victory - at the end of a full-throttle, full-bloodied match - moved them top of the Super League table amid persistent talk the play-offs may be rejigged over the coming days.

The Warriors trailed 6-4 at half-time but grew in strength as the game went on, scoring three unanswered tries after the break.

It was Lam's first derby victory as coach and asked if it was his best win, he said: "Without a doubt.

"And it was one of the most intense games I've been involved in, low errors, low penalties. It was a tough game which was in the balance for a long time, the intensity was high.

"I'm just so proud of them all - Tommy Leuluai, Jackson Hastings, I could go on. It was one of the toughest rugby league games I've seen in a long time, here or in Australia.

"I'm a bit exhausted and emotional after that."

Wigan finished the game with 12 men after Joe Greenwood was sinbinned for a high tackle which sparked a melee. The RFL's match review panel will view footage of the game on Monday before deciding whether to issue any charges and suspensions.

Lam didn't want to comment until he had seen the incident again.
