Thomas Leuluai and Liam Farrell are the front-runners to take over the role from Sean O’Loughlin, who hung up his boots at the end of last season to take a coaching position. Both have experience of leading Wigan. Leuluai, 35, and 30-year-old Farrell were acting captains last season when O’Loughlin was absent due to injury.

Lam says he will make a decision over the next few weeks but, either way, he will ask both players – and others – to play leadership roles in the squad.

He said: “It will probably be Tommy or Faz, they captained us when Sean didn’t play last year so I imagine it will come from one of those two players. But whether they’re captain or not, I’ve got a lot of leaders in the side – I include John Bateman in that – and they’ll all have roles to play.”

O’Loughlin had been captain since being handed the position by Ian Millward in 2006.

Lam has enjoyed his first few days working with England international Bateman, who has returned to the club after two years at Canberra.

“He’s the ultimate competitor and that excites me as a coach,” he said.

“He brings a strong voice to training and with Sean O’Loughlin moving onto the coaching staff he’s the perfect player to fill that role.”
