The Wigan winger hobbled off Widnes’ artificial surface in Friday’s 32-24 win.

And coach Shaun Wane revealed today the 23-year-old has injured his left anterior cruciate ligament.

Wane said: “I’m gutted for Joe because I know how hard he has worked to get the level he is at.

“His last three games have been his best of the year and he was playing really well. Joe is one of the best wingers in the competition and he will be back stronger than ever I’m sure.

“Joe is obviously very disappointed but is determined to get back as soon as possible.

“This is where our welfare programme really comes into its own and we will guide Joe through this period of recovery.”

Joe Burgess and the Wigan staff will be working hard in order for Joe to be ready to take full part in pre-season.

The setback is a huge blow for Burgess, who has been in strong form this season.

He returned to his hometown club last year after a season in the NRL, with Sydney Roosters and later South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Tom Davies will replace Burgess in the starting line-up, having recovered from an ankle injury, though he is likely to take the right spot with Liam Marshall reverting to the left.

Both young wingers recently signed new deals with the Warriors.

Wane has had to contend with several injury setbacks in the last two years but this season, until now, Wigan have been quite fortunate.

Dom Manfredi is the only other frontline player sidelined. He has not played a senior match in nearly two years and is expected back later this summer.
