The Liam Farrell column: '˜I only seem to suffer weird injuries'

The good news is I don't need surgery. I've been told my injured shoulder should be fine when it's healed.

But sadly, a 10-12 week recovery window means the clock will beat me and I’ll probably not play again this season.

I’m a bit gutted about it because this is the part of the season when it really gets interesting, with the Super-8s and the play-offs and then obviously the chance to try and get to the Grand Final.

At the same time, I’m old enough to know injuries are a part of our game, and I realise there’s not much you can do about it.

I had my shoulder X-rayed on Friday night and I’ve been back since for a CT scan.

Now, it’s a case of resting up for a while and letting the bone heal before I start the rehab process.

The injury is to my scapula, which is fairly uncommon in rugby league.

When players suffer injuries, it’s not uncommon for them to swat up on everything they can about it. I’m no different.

I already knew a bit about it from studying it at university, but I’ve been reading up more about it.

I did the same when I had an awkward rib injury – I know all about where the nerves and arteries are!

That, too, was a bit of an uncommon injury and I said to Dr Brookes, ‘I don’t often get injured but when I do, it’s always in a weird way.’

For me personally, the injury obviously took the shine off a pretty good win on Friday.

But credit to the lads, they really dug in and when I watched it back on Sky, they were saying about how many 20 and 21-year-old players were involved – it was a great effort from them.

Now they head to Huddersfield and it’s fair to say this is a different challenge than if it was a few weeks ago.

A look at their recent results tells you they’re doing well, and a look at their recent performances shows they are playing with a lot more flow under their new coach.

They always had the individuals who could cause you trouble and right now they are one of the toughest teams to play against.

So there will be no-one here taking them lightly. We want to tighten our grip on second spot and keep the pressure on St Helens at the top.
