The Liam Farrell column: '˜Micky loves it at Catalans, aside from the results'

I've never played against Micky McIlorum before. I can't say I'm looking forward to it.

I doubt any of the lads are! I’m sure he will want to make a point against us, and he will want to make an impression in the way he does best – by whacking us!

It won’t be completely new to me.

I’ve obviously faced Micky in training and he does tend to train like he plays, very physical and aggressive.

I’ve spoken to him a few times since he’s been at Catalans and he’s loving everything about being over there, aside from the results.

He’s been frustrated at the lack of wins they’ve had, but they beat Huddersfield on Monday and they looked to have a bit more fluidity about them.

It was probably the best result for us, because there is no way we’ll go over there with any sense of complacency, having seen what they did in their last game.

Remember, Huddersfield drew against Leeds three days earlier, so it was quite an impressive result.

We’ll again be flying over on the day of the game. It’s a long day but a few of the lads seem to prefer doing it this way, rather than going for two or three days.

We meet at 5am and when we arrive in France, we go to a hotel for a couple of hours for sleep before we go to the ground, and then fly back soon after the game has finished.

Hopefully with the two points on the board.

We were pretty happy with how we played in our last game, against Hull KR.

The points didn’t come until the 25th minute but, even before then, we completed our sets and were pleased with the way we performed.

To score two tries was an unexpected bonus, but everyone played their part. I was particularly pleased for Gabe Hamlin.

He did really well on his debut and has probably given Waney something to think about.

Before the game, I saw the video his mum and dad had sent over, and you could tell it meant a lot to him – he’s come to the other side of the world to pursue his dream, and I was pleased to see his first game go so well. It’s always tough backing up from Friday, but everyone goes through it and you just get on with it.

A few of the players were rested but I was keen to play – I was surprised when I got told at half-time I was done!

As for last Friday, we were disappointed to lose but it was a fast, tense game – everything a derby should be – and they probably made more of their chances.
