New Wigan Warriors signing Chris Hankinson hopes to add spark

Wigan announced the signing of the 24-year-old centre from Swinton yesterday on an 18-month deal for an undisclosed fee.

And having been a Warriors fan growing up, Hankinson – from Ashton – admits he is already straining at the leash to have his first hit out.

“I’m over the moon to be honest,” he said.

“It’s a big challenge - if I get the opportunity I’ll take it. I can’t wait to get out there.”

But Hankinson is keeping his feet on the ground.

He is currently serving his electician’s apprenticeship with Swinton Lions chairman Andy Mazey’s firm, SR Waite Electrical, and he will continue his studies despite landing a Super League contract.

“You have to make sure you’re covered for after rugby,” he explained.

“Andy gave me an apprenticeship and he’s going to let me do that in and around (full-time rugby).

“He’s done me a massive favour – I want to keep it up now and again and be able to continue to do my studies and work when I can.”

Hankinson is likely to be thrown in at the deep end, with centre Oliver Gildart (broken thumb) and back-up options Jack Higginson (knee), Liam Forsyth (knee) and James Worthington (foot) all out injured.

But the new recruit insists he is already settling into his new club.

“I know they’ve been struggling with outside backs and I’m here to grasp the opportunity and do a job,” he said.

“I had a season ticket as a kid and have always had an eye on them. I know a couple of the lads already and it’s good to come here.

“I’ve met the boys and the most important thing is to get along – it’s worked really well.”
