Speculation resurfaced tonight linking the halfback to a move to the NRL, just hours after John Bateman’s exit - at the end of the year - was confirmed.

Newcastle Knights have launched a bid to sign Williams for next season, reports Wide World of Sports’ The Mole.

Williams is in the first year of his three-year contract as a marquee player - meaning a portion of his lucrative contract does not count on the salary cap - which Wigan offered him to stave off interest from Australian clubs.

The England international is due to return from a knee injury against Castleford on Friday.
