The annual awards ceremony aims to recognise the contribution coaches make in transforming lives in communities nationwide – especially poignant this year, against the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic.

Burns has been nominated for the Changing Lives Award for his work with Wigan Warriors’ Physical and Learning Disability teams.

He said: “To be told I had been nominated for a national award was a huge surprise but to then find out I had been named as a finalist was both a huge honour and a shock!

"As a coach my main aim is to ensure my players get everything they need from a training session and help them grow.

"Being a coach of physical and learning disability teams has the added elements of differentiation and adaptation, all things that make them feel fully included.

“Rugby league and sport in general is now even more inclusive, just as it should be, and gives the opportunity for anyone to take part.

"I love coaching and being head coach of Wigan Warriors PD and LD teams is the best part of my role, the enjoyment I get, and total job satisfaction is amazing! Thank you to those who nominated me, it means so much to be recognised in UK Coaching national awards.”

UK Coaching’s director of coaching Emma Atkins added: “The UK Coaching Awards is a true highlight of the year and although December’s event will look slightly different, it is more important than ever to recognise the outstanding contributions of coaches in communities across the country this year.

“Over three million people regularly coach across the UK and I’ve been absolutely blown away with how quickly coaches were able to adapt during the pandemic to continue meeting the needs of their participants, from grassroots to elite level.

“I would like to offer huge congratulations to Scott and all of those who have been nominated for awards. The standard of nominations we received this year was extraordinary, demonstrating the impact that great coaches have had this year.

“Thank you to all our coaches across the UK, and to our finalists. We are all looking forward to celebrating your achievements in December.”
