Sarginson excited to be back on centre stage

Dan Sarginson has been at full-back since the start of March

The 22-year-old has spent the bulk of the season covering the full-back role.

But with Sam Tomkins now back fit, Sarginson (inset) is set to start Saturday’s headlining game at the Magic Weekend back at centre for the first time since the start of March.

He said: “It’s exciting to get back there. I know how to play centre better than full-back, so I’ll know my role better.

“But I have enjoyed the last couple of months at full-back - it’s been a lot more tiring than you’d think!

“I think it’s good for all players to play in other positions, and now I’m back at centre I know what I want from my full-back and what I have to do for him.”

Sarginson, who made way for Tomkins during Friday’s 30-16 loss to Hull FC, has previously played alongside the former Man of Steel for England in 2014.

He said: “He makes life easier.

“Sam’s really good technically and gets the right defenders in, and it improves players around him.”

Sarginson is preparing for his final Magic Weekend - at least for the time being - as he heads to NRL side Gold Coast Titans at the end of the year.

“I loved it at Newcastle last year and I loved it at Man City before that,” he said.

“I think it’s a great concept. I think maybe they should change it each year but Newcastle seems to be a success.

“With the big crowd we treat it like a Grand Final.”

Saturday’s match is a rematch of last October’s title-decider but Leeds are rooted to the foot of the table after a shocking season.

Sarginson says they are a great case-study of the importance of confidence to a team.

“It’s massive, if you don’t play sport you don’t realise how much confidence can do for you at the top level,” he said.

“It can change your game by massive amounts.

“Look at Kallum Watkins and Zak Hardkaer, they are maybe struggling for a bit of confidence but at any point they can turn it on and be the world-class players they are.

“Leeds can have a good 20 minutes and they’ll be back to the side they were.

“So we’re treating them as a top-three side. We won’t under-estimate them.”
