It would continue a whirlwind few days for the 21-year-old, who was their two-try hero against Wakefield before signing a new contract with his hometown club.

He said: “Last weekend was pretty much a big high, with the win and to sign again with Wigan.

“Now there’s another big game and I’ve never played at Headingley, so I’m looking forward to it.

“Everyone talks about the atmosphere there.

“I was meant to play in a final as a youngster but Joe Burgess and I got banned in the semi-final, so we missed out, big-time!”

Tierney got his chance on Friday after Dan Sarginson withdrew on the eve of the game with a shoulder injury.

And with the centre again unlikely to figure – and Sam Tomkins and Josh Charnley both doubtful – he is set to feature in Shaun Wane’s side.

He was was the match-winner in Wigan’s dramatic 22-18 win against Wakefield last Friday, which sent them top of the Super League ladder.

Less than 48 hours later, the club confirmed he had signed a new three-year deal.

Tierney – who has made 14 appearances this season – says he never considered going elsewhere, even though it may have increased his chances of playing more regularly.

“I’d not really looked into that option,” he said.

“My goal is to get a regular first-team spot here so I’m going to keep trying, and keep trying, until I get it.

“I’m just happy to sign again. I’ve been getting game-time now, I’ve played quite a few games this year, and I’ll take that into the rest of this year and next year.” Wigan will slip from their perch at the top of the Super League ladder if Hull FC beat Hull KR tonight.

As it stands, tomorrow night’s showdown is top against bottom, given Leeds’ horror run of poor results this year.

“I know they’re bottom but the are never a bottom-placed team, are they?” he added.
