Tony Clubb: Wigan Warriors are only at 60 per cent

But the prop, who has appeared in each of the Warriors’ four Super League games so far this term, also thinks his side are in for their most thorough test of the season so far when unbeaten Wakefield visit the DW Stadium on Sunday.

Wigan have made a good start to their own campaign, winning three of their opening four, but Clubb reckons there is more to come from Shaun Wane’s side.

“We are still at 60 per cent,” he said.

“We are still not putting that full 80 minutes in and I think when we do we are going to put someone to the sword there. We had a meeting today about it and we are not that far off, we are doing all the right things, we have just got to do it for longer in games.”

Wigan had to fight back from 16-0 down to beat Widnes 32-16 last Friday, despite the players feeling they started well.

And Clubb says combing over fine details with the coach will help Wigan hit their straps.

“It gets a bit animated sometimes but you know that’s what you need,” he revealed.“The tiny sort of basic errors and he picks up on everything like that so you can’t miss a beat in training and games. He (Wane) is on top of you with things like that.

“He always talks about detail and it could be the tiniest, tiniest thing. You do individual videos with him and you think you’ve made a good tackle and then he’ll pick something up on it and at the end of the meeting you do end up thinking ‘yeah if I would have done that then it would have been a lot better,’ but when you first look at it you think, ‘I made a good tackle’. But I suppose that’s what makes him a good coach and why we all like him. It’s the little things that no one else sees that Waney sees.”

Clubb also revealed he is feeling the benefits of having a full pre-season behind him after injury stalled his 2017 campaign.

He already had surgery to put a cage in his neck to support a bulging disc before last season started, then needed surgery to remove a kidney 12 months ago.

But back to full fitness, and with two tries to his name from his opening four games, Clubb is optimistic for this term.

“There are a few things I’d like to have done differently but I am happy with how I am going at the minute,” he said.

“I still feel like I’ll get a lot better over the next few weeks but I am happy with where I am.

“I think that is the benefit of a full preseason, I didn’t get that last year. Of the sort of 10 weeks we were in , I was probably only in four to five weeks and doing a full preseason, full tackling, you name it, I did it. Now I feel like I am fit, strong and feel like I am getting the benefit from it.”

Sunday’s opponents Wakefield’s wins so far this term include away successes at Hull KR and Catalans Dragons, and Clubb has identified threats across their lineup.

“They are travelling well. From the bits I have seen of them, they are a big physical set of boys upfront and

the winger and the halves are very good for them,” he said.

“It is going to be our toughest test this year I think. We spoke about playing well and playing well at home and that’s something we want to keep up.

“We want to carry on winning, they obviously want to carry on when they’ve

not lost so it’s got all the makings for a really good game and it’s one we are excited about.

“We’ve had a meeting and we’ve spoken about it, these are exciting times. Wakefield are playing really well and they are not sitting at the top for no reason.”
