He had been battling cancer for some time.

A former player, Roden had been a member of the Wigan RL referees' society for many years and was a familiar face at amateur clubs across the borough.

Super League referee Liam Moore said: "He was well respected across the community game and a strong supporter of referees.

"Carl was at my very first match and gave me some wise words of advice with one of his old shirts after the game, something I never forgot. Years later, I was able to return the favour and gave him my World Cup shirt, which I know he wore with pride.

"A real genuine bloke who had a heart of gold and a fighter until the end. One of the good guys. Thanks for everything mate."

Wigan RL referees' society said: "Carl was a stalwart of rugby league, firstly as a player and later as a referee.

"He served our society with distinction and was an incredibly popular figure throughout the sport."

St Pats, where he played when he was younger, described him as a "class person" who had fought cancer "courageously" while Orrell St James said he "touched the lives of many rugby players and will never be forgotten".

The Hindley club noted Roden not only refereed the juniors, but was happy to "offer his wisdom and expertise. He will be remembered fondly by many and sincerely missed".

Jean Girvin, an administrator in north west rugby league and wife of Ron, who passed away last month, also died yesterday.

Referee Robert Hicks said: "Two super volunteers lost to the sport. Thoughts with the family, friends and associates of Jean Girvin and Carl Roden. Both gave so much time to improve the sport they loved and to help people enjoy it."
