Warriors poised to confirm new coach

Adrian Lam was a firm crowd pleaser as a Wigan player

A Warriors post on Twitter teased an announcement will be made at 8pm.

The short video gives no details about the nature of what will be issued, but coming so soon after John Bateman’s move to the NRL exit was confirmed - and that Wigan rarely post such cryptic messages - it seems logical it will be regarding the new coach.

Former players Adrian Lam and Shaun Edwards are favourites to succeed Shaun Wane, as reported a month ago by the Wigan Observer.

Legend Edwards is under contract with Wales RU until the end of next year’s World Cup which has led to suggestions an interim, such as Lam, could be put in charge for one season.

Such a move may suit former player Lam, giving him head coaching experience and thrusting him back into the spotlight.

He started his coaching career in 2005 with a junior role with Wigan, having made 119 appearances as a player in the previous four years in which he became a firm fans’ favourite.

He later went on to work as an assistant at Cronulla and St George Illawarra, and as a member of the Kangaroos staff.

Edwards was pictured at the DW Stadium last month scribbling notes from his seat in the East Stand.

The snap was posted on social media and inevitably fuelled the rumours that a return to the club where he cast his legacy could be on the cards.

Edwards has previously admitted he would be open to another code switch.

And chairman Ian Lenagan revealed to the Observer shortly after Wane confirmed his move to Scotland RU that he was leaning towards appointing a league man working in union, or an NRL assistant.

An interesting bolt-on with the Lam link is the suggestion he could bring with him his son, Lachlan, who is highly-regarded but has yet to crack the Sydney Roosters first-team.

Lam junior made the Queensland Under-20s squad this summer and featured for Papua New Guinea - his dad’s birthplace - in last year’s World Cup.
