What does the future hold for Warriors playmaker?

Jackson Hastings could yet stay in England next year – according to his Australian-based manager.

The 24-year-old half-back had been expected to leave Wigan at the end of the year, due to an NRL release clause.

He was even included on the RFL’s off-contract list earlier this week.

But Sam Ayoub, speaking to the Australian Daily Telegraph, says Hastings is happy to extend his UK adventure for at least another 12 months.

“Jacko is really enjoying his footy and time over there and it’s showing in the footy he is delivering,” he said. “You don’t win the Man of Steel by such a large margin last year if you’re not ‘braining it’.

“And no doubt he will be right up there again this year. His stats are off the charts.

“I think, at this stage, he is keen to have another year over there and that’s what I have said to clubs who have come to us. We will play it by ear – there is certainly no rush.”

Wigan have already signed half-back Jai Field from Parramatta for 2021 but, with Bevan French strongly tipped for an NRL return, he could be utilised at full-back.

Tommy Leuluai has not made a decision on whether to retire, while young Harry Smith has been progressing well and seen as an eventual starting half-back.

It could even be that Hastings stays in England but switches clubs, with rivals Hull believed to be interested.

Warrington, too, could possibly come into the equation if Gareth Widdop returns to Australia.

“There is still a lot of potential activity to happen here,” added Ayoub. “He is weighing things up.

“I’ve got all the time in the world for ‘Jacko’. I just want what is best for him. I think he may stay for at least another year. People forget he only turned 24 this year.”
