Why Wane expects Tomkins' form to improve

He will leave Wigan at the end of the season to take up a three-year deal with Catalans.

The clubs confirmed the details on Monday but the speculation has rumbled on for weeks – during which time Tomkins has been turning up the volume on the pitch while remaining silent off it.

And asked whether he expected an improvement in the 29-year-old’s displays, Wane replied: “100 per cent. 100 per cent.

“This has been a lot... he’s not a devious person, Sam. He’s an honest kid and I imagine this will be a weight off his mind.

“He’s a competitor and he will be hell-bent on finishing this year as a success.”

Wigan, expected to sign Zak Hardaker for 2019, offered Tomkins a new four-year deal but he decided to take up the challenge with Catalans.

Wane admitted he was “gutted” when Tomkins broke the news but respected his decision.

“He’s a personal friend, I’ve worked with him as a kid and I want him to have the best life possible,” said the coach.

“He’s doing what he feels is right for his family. He’s been a great servant to us and we wish him all the best.

“He’s a deep kid, he’ll have given it a lot of thought.”

Wane wasn’t surprised to see Catalans make a move for Tomkins as they try and shake off their tag as Super League’s perennial under-achievers.

“He’s big for us, he has the same impact on the team as Lockers,” said Wane.

“They’re getting the ultimate competitor.

“The flashy things he does are third or fourth on the list – the first is his will to win.”

Sean O’Loughlin (calf) is a doubt for Saturday’s Magic Weekend clash with Warrington in Newcastle but George Williams (wrist) is expected to play.

Wane will name his squad today and says he expects to bring Frenchman Morgan Escare back into the mix.

Meanwhile, Joe Bretherton and James Worthington yesterday joined Championship side Toulouse Olympique on loan for one month.

Bretherton has played 17 times for the Warriors first team while teenager Worthington scored twice on his debut last year.

Executive director Kris Radlinski said: “With the first-team squad looking so healthy, both Joe and James were going to struggle for game time, so when the opportunity came about with Toulouse it was an easy decision to make.

“Both players are champing at the bit to get out there and play.”
