Wigan Warriors coach Shaun Wane warns of Josh Charnley threat

The winger was kept quiet in Wigan’s 38-10 win over the Wolves at Magic Weekend last month, but Wane thinks now that first meeting is out of the way, he could be one of Warrington’s main threats in this afternoon’s Challenge Cup quarter-final.

“He was a bit off at Magic Weekend but he can play, he’s a competitor,” said Wane.

“I don’t think we’ll see that performance again. He’ll be up for it on Saturday and want to prove everybody wrong.”

Wane admitted players can be affected by the occasion of facing their former club for the first time, and he recalled returning to Wigan as a Leeds player in his career.

“I’ve been there. I was at Wigan for 10 years, went to Leeds and when we came back to play them I walked in the wrong dressing room when I got to Central Park,” he said.

“Josh would have felt that way. He was here a long, long time.

“It would’ve been awkward. It’s not a good feeling, I remember it.

“That first game is a tough one and now he’ll get rid of that thought in his head a concentrate on what he does for Warrington and being the best winger on the field.

“That means we need to defend and put him under pressure and that will be tough to do.”
