The 22-year-old’s departure to Canberra Raiders on a two-year deal at the end of the season was announced yesterday.

And while Wane says Sutton’s move will be tough for the prop, he believe he can make a success of it.

“I think there’s a chance. I really hope he makes it a success but it’s going to be tough,” said the coach.

“I want to make sure he’s ok.

“Personally I’d have liked him to stay a few more years.

“I think he needs a few more years here, win a few more things here then he’s ready but he sees himself as ready now and I’ll support him on that and give him everything he needs.

“He’s chosen that route and good luck to him. I’ll help him in any way I can.”

Despite outlining the challenge ahead for Sutton, Wane did say the Raiders have acquired a good player.

“He’s tough, he’s a competitor and I’ve never dropped him,” he said, before advising Sutton to go straight to Canberra from England Knights’ tour of Papua New Guinea in the autumn.

“I’d advise him to go straight there from Papua New Guinea and don’t have a break but they’ve got a quality player,” he added.

“I don’t watch Canberra that often but I will do now here’s there.

“I just want Canberra to see the best of him and he needs a good pre-season. He needs as long as possible and get straight into pre-season training.”
