FC Barcelona have invited the Catalans Dragons to use their home ground for a fixture.

And the president of FC Barcelona proposed to his Catalans counterpart, Bernard Guasch, that they welcome Wigan to the hallowed turf in June 2019, reports L’Independent newspaper.

It has also been reported by The Sun that the match is set for next June, and the plan is just waiting for approval from the RFL and Super League.

The invitation was made when Catalans players, including ex-Warriors Micky McIlorum and Lewis Tierney, were guests at yesterday’s game against Girona. At half-time, players and staff paraded the Challenge Cup trophy on the pitch.

Catalans have taken home games on the road before; Wigan have played at Avignon, and a crowd of 18,000-plus watched the Dragons face Warrington at Barcelona’s Olympic Stadium in 2009.

But given the fame of the 99,000-capacity Nou Camp, it would make this an attractive away day for the travelling Wigan fans.

Sam Tomkins is joining the Dragons next season.

The Nou Camp hosted the Top 14 rugby union final between Toulon and Racing 92 two years ago.
