WIGAN’S George Williams was today celebrating being named Super League’s young player of the year.

He beat off competition from teammate Joe Burgess and Warrington forward Ben Currie to take the coveted prize for players aged 21 or under from the start of the year.

Williams was handed the no.6 shirt at the start of the year and has grown into the role, helping Wigan to Saturday’s Grand Final.

Club legend Denis Betts presented Williams with the award.

Leeds fullback Zak Hardaker took the main prize, the Steve Prescott Man of Steel at a glitzy dinner at Lancashire CC’s Old Trafford.

Brian McDermott was named coach of the year and Leeds claimed the club of the year award.

Wigan legend Brett Kenny was at the dinner, and caught up with former teammate Shaun Wane during the event.
