JONATHAN Jackson admits he’ll be playing in his own version of fantasy football tonight when a team of Latics legends take on the Wigan Athletic Development Squad in support of Joseph’s Goal.
Young against relatively old will collide at Ashton Town FC (7.30pm), with Jackson looking forward to lining up with all-time greats like Roberto Martinez, Graeme Jones, Emmerson Boyce, Gary Caldwell and Nathan Ellington in the legends line-up.
“It’ll be wonderful to see all the ex-players back in Wigan,” said Jackson. “These are players I admired from the terraces of Springfield Park and at the DW Stadium, and some I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside.
“They’ve had some good times here and maybe some not-so-good times, but everyone remains committed to the club. It’s been a difficult season, but there’s still an affinity and a desire to stick together for a fabulous cause in Joseph’s Goal.”
The return of Martinez and Jones to Wigan will evoke memories of the FA Cup triumph of 2013. And with Caldwell wanting to get Latics back to the Spaniard’s way of playing, Jackson is hoping the good times will soon return.
“Everyone likes to see their team playing the kind of football that is admired across the country, and that’s what we’re trying to do,” he added.
Some of the other confirmed legends include Mike Pollitt, Chris Kirkland, Neill Rimmer, Simon Haworth, Peter Atherton, Graham Lancashire, Ray Woods and Don Page, as well as current stars Tim Chow, Lee Nicholls, Jordan Flores and Louis Robles.
Tickets are £5 adults, £2 concessions, U5s free, and available from the DW ticket office. It’s also pay on the night, but fans should get to Edge Green Street (WN4 8SL) early as a big crowd is expected.
