THREE promising players are in the frame to make their Warriors debuts in Sunday’s clash at Widnes.
Shaun Wane last night revealed Anthony Gelling, Matt Russell and Logan Tomkins will all be in the 19-man provisional squad he announces late today.
With two of that panel cut on game-day, it means at least one of those will get a Warriors bow – as Wane rolls his troops for the visit to the Super League new-boys.
The coach said he would wait to see how the players fare in their final training session before confirming his squad, though he may take the opportunity to rest-up a couple of his senior stars.
Centre Gelling was recruited in the off-season from Auckland Vulcans and showed some promising touches during pre-season. Full-back Russell has sparkled in the academy set-up and last week scored two tries for Leigh on a dual-registration.
Hooker Tomkins – younger brother of Sam – has been on the fringes of selection for a while.
Wane said: “I’m going to give a chance to at least one of the players this week.
“All three will be in the 19 but I’ve yet to decide who’ll be in and who won’t. Matt’s always stood out for the Under-20s and he deserves a place in the squad, Logan is an old-head on young shoulders and – like Matt – I’m sure he wouldn’t let us down if he got his chance.
“Anthony has really come on in the short-time he’s been here and now he needs game-time so we can see where he’s at.”
Wane revealed at the start of the season his plan to rotate the squad more than his predecessor, Michael Maguire.
The coach believes getting the young players battle-hardened to the intensity of Super League will strengthen the squad in terms of competition and cover – and also help keep the front-line stars fresh for the end of the season.
