Marshall delight at new four-year deal for Warriors

Academy product Marshall has penned a four-year deal and says he is delighted to tie his future to his hometown club.

Marshall said: “It is a massive honour to sign a contract extension with my hometown club. The past 12 months have been a whirlwind for me and I couldn’t have dreamed of it going as well as it has done.

“A big factor in wanting to stay at Wigan is the success that the club has year on year and the opportunities you get as a player. In the short time I have been in the first team I have played at Wembley and also got the chance to travel over to Australia and play in the historical game in Wollongong, which was an amazing experience.

“I now want to go on to have further success at Wigan and win trophies. I’d just like to thank all of the fans for their support also as they are a massive part of the success at the club.”

Marshall spent three years in the Under-19s team and a further year with the reserves team, alongside playing for Swinton Lions, before signing professional terms ahead of last season.

Since making his first team debut he has gone on to score 32 tries in just 30 games.

“In 2016 I was out on a limb with not being signed full time at Wigan and without the year I spent at Swinton and playing for the reserves I wouldn’t be in the position I am today so I owe a lot to that.

The new contract means Liam will be a Warriors player until the end of the 2022 season.

Wigan executive director, Kris Radlinski, said: “Liam has been on quite a journey to get to this point and his story is a glowing testament to the Wigan reserves team without whom we would probably have lost him.

“Undoubtedly a talented rugby league player, Liam has excelled since debuting for the first team. Already one of the best strike players in Super League, he continues to improve on a weekly basis.

“Polite, well-mannered and with a great sense of humour too, Liam is very popular amongst his peers and we look forward to having him around for at least another four years.”

Wigan Warriors head coach, Shaun Wane, said: "Liam is very popular with the playing group and is an outstanding talent. He’s up there as one of the best finishers in the game and that is down to continuous practice and an unbelievable skillset.”
