SAM Tomkins would have been considered for selection to face New Zealand had he been available, according to England coach Steve McNamara.
Tomkins hasn’t played since August due to a knee injury, and has failed to recover in time after a reaction following training on Tuesday.
Despite the length of his absence, and having Super League Man of Steel Zak Hardaker to fill the full-back role, McNamara said Tomkins would have forced him to consider his selection before naming his squad.
“He would have been up for consideration,” said the England coach.
“He’s a very good player. He’s been very important to this group for a number of years and it would have been nice to have him available for selection whether we would have gone that way or not.
“Unfortunately for Sam, he tried his damned hardest to get fit and he did train very strong for a large part of the session on Tuesday, but his knee just reacted poorly.”
