Powell hungry to make an impact at Warriors

NEW recruit Andy Powell has already impressed Shaun Wane – without playing a game!

The former Wales international only starts his contract with Wigan next month.

But he has cut short his break to report for training at the Warriors camp.

And Wane said: “He was allowed some time off because he’s just finished the season in union with Sale.

“But he’s come in at his own accord, and that showed me he’s got desire to make a success of his switch. He is really keen.”

Powell, 31, is expected to play prop for the Warriors but Wane says it may be a while before fans see him pull on the Cherry and White.

“We found out that he’s still a long way from challenging for a first-team spot,” he admitted.

“It’s a challenge for the coaches, because working with Andy is totally different to the others.

“We’re used to dealing with players who have been playing-the-ball since they were four years old, and he has to learn the basics of the game.

“But he is a specimen, he’s an athlete, he’s got the desire to learn and the potential will make it worthwhile.”

Wane will be in Manchester later today for a media event to promote this weekend’s Magic event. Wigan play Leeds in Sunday’s headlining match.

He hopes to recall Matty Smith from a shoulder injury but Gil Dudson’s chances of returning from a neck problem were rated at “about 50-50”.
