GARY Caldwell says Latics have set the standard with their recent back-to-back away wins to give them plenty of confidence to take into the festive programme.

Tomorrow’s visit of Chelsea is the first of three tough tests in the space of a fortnight, with Liverpool also due at the DW before the Boxing Day trip to champions Manchester United.

But Caldwell says there’s no reason for Latics to approach the next three games with anything other than confidence and optimism – if they can build on their backs-to-the-wall display at the Hawthorns.

“It was a big statement for us to have come from behind to win away for the second week in a row,” he told the Evening Post.

“There are times in this league where you’ve no option but to dig in and grind out results. West Brom was one of those games, and every single one of us did that.

“It was probably a must-win for us, given the games we’ve got coming up, and you could see that with the application of everyone. But it’s about taking that on now.

“We were all disappointed the previous week with the performance against Arsenal, another top side, and hopefully we can learn from that for the games against Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United.”
