THE possibility of Sam Tomkins facing Wigan will be raised when a friendly against New Zealand Warriors is confirmed.

The two outfits – who share a working relationship – have agreed to a friendly about 10 days before Shaun Wane’s champions face Sydney Roosters in the World Club Challenge.

Details could be confirmed within days after Wigan opted for a warm-up with New Zealand, rather than a match in Papua New Guinea, to prepare for their showdown against the NRL champions on February 22.

Auckland is staging the inaugural NRL Nines over the previous weekend – three or four days after their trial against Wigan.

That means the Warriors may not field a full-strength side in their match against Wane’s men – leaving a question-mark over whether Tomkins, and fellow ex-Cherry and White favourite Thomas Leuluai, are involved.

Chairman Ian Lenagan reckons their decision to fly Down Under has served as a reminder of the club’s profile in the sport.

He said: “Australians all know about Wigan. Just like 20 years ago, we’re going there partly because, yes, we want to – but partly because they wanted us there as well.

“It’s the biggest name in UK rugby league. I’ve made our enthusiasm clear, when you talk to the NRL they want passion, but I’ve not needed to drive it.

“I’ve already spoken to a lot of Wigan fans who are going to the game.”
