WIGAN slipped from top-spot as Wakefield produced a mighty fright to rock the champions.

Reece Lyne marked his comeback from injury with the killer blow with three minutes to go, pouncing for a try which snuffed out any hopes of the visitors fighting back.

Intriguingly, Wakefield had Taulima Tautai in their ranks ahead of his move to the Warriors next season.

By the point he entered the action, fans had seen Wigan take a grip of an entertaining contest with three successive tries, following the home side’s opener.

Liam Farrell’s fumble gave the Wildcats possession, and three plays later they stacked their right-side attack and Danny Kirmond muscled his way through.

They went close to extending their 6-0 lead from the restart, breaking down their left, but the move fizzled out.

Jack Hughes and Liam Farrell scored tries to put Wigan in front and in-form Anthony Gelling piled on the misery as he pounced on Smith’s angled kick.

One of Tautai’s surging drives put the visitors on the back-foot, and ex-Warrior Tim Smith jinked over. From the kick-off, they broke down Wigan’s left, leading to Richard Owen skipping out of Sarginson’s despairing tackle.

And then, just before the hooter, Wakefield took the lead - and Wane must have been cursing how soft the score was, as Richard Moore trundled between Jordan James and Hughes.

After the restart the free-flowing, end-to-end pattern continued as Liam Farrell charged over from Sam Powell’s pass, his second of the day which sent him two clear of Joe Burgess as the club’s top tryscorer in Super League, with 12.

Hughes’ shoulder-charge on Smith gifted the Wildcats a 56th minute penalty, and Sykes inches them 26-24 ahead.

Dan Sarginson scored to nudge Wigan back in front but Wakefield struck the killer blow, Sykes offloading on the attack and Reece Lyne dived over.
