SHAUN Wane has welcomed a third “new signing” to training this week.
Wane says Greg Burke has returned to the club a different player following a year away.
Burke spent the entire 2015 campaign on loan at Hull KR.
And just days after returning for pre-season training with Wigan, the coach has already seen evidence the experience helped the 22-year-old’s development.
Wane, who has signed Willie Isa and returning full-back Sam Tomkins for 2016, said: “Greg looks in good shape, and he seems to be more mature than the player who left.
“He’s a Wigan lad and going away to a new club, a new environment and having to make a new bunch of friends, it’s helped him.
“And of course he gained a lot of playing experience, and hopefully that will help him kick on.”
Burke burst onto the scene in the double-winning 2013 season and made 17 appearances.
But he found first-team chances limited the following year, and played just six times in a season which included a loan move to Bradford which was cut short by injury.
“I see him as a middle, and we want him to really challenge for a first-team place,” added Wane.
Wigan players yesterday underwent VO2 Max testing at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston.
“All the results were encouraging, they’ve come back in really good shape,” added Wane.
