Wane salutes '˜ruthless' Wigan after crushing win

The Warriors scored nine tries to beat Huddersfield 48-10 and keep up the pressure on Super League leaders St Helens - a week before their mouth-watering Good Friday derby.

Wane acknowledged the Giants’ bad luck with injuries, with three more players added to their casualty list during the game.

But even so, he was understandably pleased with this complete display.

“It was a good performance, our best this season,” he said, after their biggest win since August 2016.

“We’ll not be celebrating too much because they have a few injuries. They can play a lot better, and they will.

“But I was pleased with how professional we were.

“We completed at 100 per cent in the second-half which shows a ruthless mentality.

“Defensively, we were strong, our middles ran hard, we ended our sets well, we took our chances... I was happy.

“I’ve just been asked who played well and I went through pretty-much everyone!”

Wingers Tom Davies and Joe Burgess each finished with two tries while Oliver Gildart, John Bateman, George Williams, Ryan Sutton and Willie Isa also crossed.

Full-back Sam Tomkins, who celebrated his 29th birthday, kicked five goals from six attempts before he, Sean O’Loughlin and Williams were rested late on to protect them for next Friday’s derby.

“I can’t wait for Friday, it’s game on, I wish it was tomorrow,” said Wane, who reported no injury concerns.

Huddersfield coach Rick Stone was pleased with the effort of his players in the second-half, considering they had to cope with leg injuries to Dale Ferguson, Sam Wood and Jermaine McGillvary.

But he said: “The damage was done in the first-half. The ruck was the biggest concern, we were back-peddling the whole time. Wigan were pretty ruthless.

“We’re down on confidence, we’re not playing with the spirit I know we can. It’s hard to win games without your best players available.”
