MICHAEL Maguire has backed Shaun Wane to be a big hit as a head coach.
Wane will be confirmed as Warriors’ new boss at a media conference at the DW Stadium this afternoon.
Iestyn Harris is expected to be appointed his assistant with Paul Deacon taking a coaching role as well.
Wane has spent the past two years working alongside Maguire and helped transform the club’s fortunate.
And Souths-bound Maguire has no doubts that his former No.2 is ready for a head coaching position.
He said: “Waney was a major part of the success we had here over the past two years. He is very passionate – he has added a bit to my coaching style as well.
“And there’s a lot more to him as a coach. He’s very good with the players, he works hard, and he’s good technically as well.
“I was very fortunate that I learned a lot about the technical side of things at Melbourne and he’s taken that on board, and seeing him about the boys, I’m sure there are some good times ahead.”
The long-awaited announcement of Wigan’s new coaching team is expected to be followed within the next few days by confirmation that ex-Hull FC prop Epalahame Lauaki and former Crusaders centre Gareth Thomas will be joining the club for 2012.
Two other former Crusaders players, Gil Dudson and Ben Flower, have also been linked with moves to the DW.
Chairman Ian Lenagan yesterday refused to comment on heightening speculation that Joel Tomkins could be poised to leave for a big-money move to rugby union.
