Golf ace Lee Westwood has revealed why he is a Wigan fan – it’s all down to former crowd-pleaser Steve Hampson.
The 44-year-old was at the second day of the Magic Weekend yesterday, and gave an interview to Robbie Hunter-Paul about his interest in rugby league (see attached video).
Westwood revealed: “I used to be trained by Steve Hampson, he got me into Wigan and I’ve been a fan ever since.”
Westwood, who has never won a major but has often been a Ryder Cup hero for Europe, took his family to the event in Newcastle and gave the Magic Weekend the thumbs-up.
Football’s Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand and Michael Carrick, snooker’s Jimmy White and rugby union great Jonny Wilkinson are among the other sports stars who support Wigan.
And boxing great Evander Holyfield has vowed to get to a game after an unusual link-up last week!
He initially tweeted Wigan in error but joined in with banter with Wiganers, and on Friday even announced contract extensions for Liam Farrell, Joel Tomkins and Taulima Tautai on his Twitter account.
