Josh Woods is keeping his feet firmly on the ground despite his headline-grabbing drop-goal heroics.
The 20-year-old halfback has been given a run in the side while George Williams recovers from a knee injury.
And having impressed against Leeds, he backed that up by showing a cool head to nail the decisive strike in Friday’s 13-12 win against Warrington.
Shaun Wane later praised him for giving him a head-ache but Woods is not getting carried away.
“You never want to see a world class player like George out of the team but when I’m in, I have to step up and do what’s best for the team,” he said.
“Doing this is what I dreamed about as a kid.”
Woods revealed he was not expecting to receive the pass for the late drop-goal, moments after Josh Charnley’s try had levelled the scores.
“We had a chat when the try went up to the video ref, we said, ‘We have two minutes now, 100 per cent effort’ - we defended like our lives depended on it, and then got up field,” he said.
“It came as a bit of a shock, Sam (Tomkins) was in position but it fell to me, I struck it sweet and it went over.
“Then I thought I’d done something to my ankle when everyone jumped on me! But it was a great, great feeling.
“It was a massive game in all aspects, both sides gave their best – there were a lot of busted bodies – and it could have gone either way.”
Meanwhile, Wane hopes to discovered today the extent of a shoulder injury suffered by Liam Farrell.
The forward left Friday’s game in the first-half and later that evening went to hospitals for checks.
A long lay-off would be a cruel blow for Farrell, who had been in good form.
Willie Isa and youngster Liam Paisley would be obvious candidates to replace him, certainly until mid-season recruit Joe Greenwood has recovered from a rolled ankle.
Wigan head to Huddersfield on Thursday in a non-televised match – it has been brought forward to accommodate a Little Mix concert.
They then face St Helens and Catalans at home before the season splits for the Super-8s phase.
Wane expects Dan Sarginson to return to the mix this week, while French forward Romain Navarrete will be available after suspension.
