Williams hopes to play the right Toon!

Williams was on course to play in the Test against Samoa.

But hours before being due to fly out to Sydney, he injured his knee in a defeat to Castleford.

Brown was swiftly drafted in as a replacement and impressed at stand-off in the 30-10 Test victory.

And the Warrington ace backed that up with a hat-trick display against former club Widnes last weekend.

“Kev’s playing well, he’s a good bloke and a good player,” said Williams.

“After my injury I’m happy he got in, but I’ll be wanting to prove a point.

“I just try and play the best each week and I’m sure Kev is the same - though it would be nice to score and set a few up!”

Williams admits he “feared the worst” when he injured his knee in the 54-4 mauling at Castleford but scans revealed a muscle tear, and he was due to return to action for Sunday’s Challenge Cup tie at Swinton.

He was named in the line-up, but had to withdraw after being struck down by a migraine.

“I used to get them really bad but I’ve not had one for months,” the 22-year-old revealed.

“It was bad – I couldn’t open my eyes, I couldn’t look at light.

“They did everything they could to try and get me better, I took tablets, but it wasn’t happening.

“I didn’t want to drop out because I’d trained all week and a few lads had said they were glad I was back.

“I was at Swinton, but as soon as it kicked off I went home, I was in a bad way. Thankfully I’m over it now.”

Wigan have a perfect Magic Weekend record under Shaun Wane and Williams is a fan of the on-the-road concept.

“I enjoy it, I used to sit and watch them all on TV when I was younger and it still feels a bit strange to be playing in it,” he said.

“It’s a great day for the fans who go, and Newcastle’s got a great atmosphere - the fans are quite close to the pitch.”
